I was sitting around today reminiscing about some time I spent with my mom going through some old photo albums and I had a horrible thought. My mom knows who all the people and places are in those old books, but none of the rest of us do. I do not want that family history or those memories to be lost when she is gone, so we are going to start a project to archive them.
The plan is this. I will sit down with my mom and go through all of the old albums putting a post-it note on each one with all the information. I will then scan all the photos and have a series of photo books printed with captions describing each photo. I can make copies for everyone in the family, this stuff is cheap on sites like Snapfish. It may take a few years (we have a lot of albums), but I hope to put together a library of books that contain the photographic history of my family.
I urge you, if you have older family members, to find a way to record this history so it is not lost forever. I want my children to be able to look back at these some day and not wonder who all those strange people are in those old pictures. It will be a few months before I have a chance to get started, but if you can, start now. If you put it off too long it may be too late.
